Nash

You came into our lives,
A butterball of softness,
Liquid brown eyes full of trust.
You stole our hearts a little more
With every grunt and wiggle

In the morning, you came running
As fast as small legs could pump
Craving our love, bestowing kisses.

I would look into your eyes
And see long happy days of sunshine,
Imagine you, grown, a noble thing
Your ears perked, the ends turned down
That warm pink tongue
Panting softly in joy.

You went from our lives today
With finality and tears
Those warm eyes mutilated
In senseless loss.
In lieu of joyous yips and grunts
There is silence

Soft lifeless fur stirred
By a departing autumn wind
